Here are some quick definitions:

What is a Merlot wine?

Merlot wines are based on this grape which is found in the Bordeaux region. It is a lighter red wine than a Cabernet and tends to ripen earlier due the grape's thinner skin. Some of the flavors that you may find in a Merlot wine are black cherry, currant, and cedar. As to the food that you may pair with it, simple meat dishes work well with this type of wine.

What is a Cabernet?

The Cabernet wine is also a red wine but is heartier than the Merlot. It takes longer to ripen and the grape has a thicker skin. It was first produced in the Bordeaux region but has now begun to be grown across the globe from California to Australia. The flavors that you may detect in this type of wine are black currant, cherry, pepper and green olive. These type of wines would be excellent with steaks and heartier meats.

What is a Chardonnay?

Chardonnay wines are white and can often be paired with fish, chicken or pasta. Chardonnay grapes are only allowed by the French government to be grown in Chablis, Burgandy but other countries have begun to grow these grapes and produce excellent wines. California, especially, has embraced this grape for its white wines. The grape tends to grow well and in large quantities and produces very aromatic wines with flavors of apple, tangerine, lemon, lime, melon, and oak.

What is a Reisling wine?

Reisling wines are white wines made from the Reisling grape. These grapes are most often found in Germany, France, Italy and Austria, although you can now find these wines produced here in the states. Unlike other wines these wines are better when they are not aged too much. They are lighter, fruiter wines that often have the taste of apples, peach, grapefruit and sometimes a hint of honey. You can pair this wine with fish, desserts, fruit and cheeses.

What is a Pinot Noir?

Pinots are one of the more popular wines and their popularity increased with the movie Sideways that came out a few years ago. Pinots are red wines and the grapes grow in the Bordeaux region  and yet many fine Pinot wines have been cultivated in California and Oregon. The grapes tend to ripen early and it is not the easiest of grapes or wines to cultivate, as it must remain in a cool climate. It is sweeter than a Cabernet and yet has a very transient taste. It is often called the "chamelon of wines" as it can take on many of the same charecteristics of the other red wines. Younger Pinots take on fruitier flavors and yet when it ages it can turn to earthy more vegetative tastes.
